Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Fairfield Elementary Magnet School! On behalf of our Fairfield PTA, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our new and returning Bulldog families – whether you are joining us in the classroom this year or virtually, we are truly excited to welcome each of you! With all the challenges that 2020 has brought, I am looking forward to getting back into the routine of school, even if it does look a little different this year.
My husband and I have two children; Emily is 9 and starting fourth grade, and Will is almost 8 and starting second grade. This will be our fifth year at Fairfield, and we are excited to see what it will hold for each of our kids. We came to Fairfield because it is a school of exemplary academic achievement, and we saw how the Fairfield family – students, teachers, administration, staff, PTA – work together tirelessly to provide the very best learning environment possible for our children. I have no doubt about the ability of our amazing faculty and staff to provide our students with an outstanding education in a warm, supportive, nurturing setting, even with the circumstances in the world are uncertain and scary.
I imagine that we are all approaching this school year with a mix of hopefulness, anxiety, fear, relief, and a million other emotions. And, while we don’t know exactly what the school year will end up looking like, we are planning to have as “normal” a year as possible (and being flexible and patient as we navigate changing circumstances and requirements). One of the things that I am most excited about is our new Global Studies focus – our faculty and staff have put in countless hours planning how to integrate a broader worldview into our existing curriculum in a way that allows our students to expand their horizons. I’m looking forward to some meaningful conversations with my kids about all that they are learning.
I have had the privilege of meeting with our wonderful new principal, Dr. Ronald Morris, several times over the summer, and I’m impressed with how quickly he’s jumped into learning about Fairfield, how sincerely he seeks input from all members of our Fairfield community, and how many new ideas he’s sharing with us. I am excited for each of you to get to know him – I know you’ll be impressed. We have been working on a school calendar that incorporates as many of our traditional events as possible while leaving room for changes, if needed, due to the then-current requirements related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We will communicate changes to events through our app, which we rolled out with much success during the last school year.
Please be sure to download the app and/or re-register after August 1 – we will be using the new registration information to update our parent/child directory in the app. Like last year, we will continue to be almost entirely paperless, so please be sure you have the app and are receiving notifications from the school and from your child’s teacher(s) so that you can stay in the loop.
The primary place to get current, correct information will be our app (see above) and this website at www.fairfieldmagnet.org, which serves to showcase our school as well as to provide information about the school and PTA events. Teachers’ individual websites can be accessed through the app and the website, and both contain links to important education enhancing sites. Additionally, we have an Instagram account (connect at @fairfieldelementarymagnet) and a Twitter account (connect at @magnetfairfield) that we’d love for you to follow. Another very helpful source of information is the Fairfield Elementary Magnet School Facebook page. When you “Like” this page, important announcements will show up in your Facebook feed. A panel of teachers and parents also administer a private Fairfield Parent/Teacher Page (also on Facebook) as a forum for exchanging information in a family friendly forum. It is open to our families only and requires approval to join. Please email me at [email protected]
if you would like to be added.
As many of you know, last year we created the Fairfield Foundation to assist in fundraising for Fairfield. The Fairfield Foundation is entirely separate from PTA, but we are working together to continue to provide much-need extras for our children, faculty and staff at Fairfield. Fairfield Foundation board members have been busy over the summer lining up sponsorships from businesses and individuals with the goal of bringing some outside funding for our various projects. Our Fairfield community and local businesses were so generous last year that the Fairfield Foundation was able to purchase the remaining five SmartTVs needed to provide one for each of our classrooms and to fund a global themed mural for our school cafeteria (coming soon)! They have exciting things planned for the current school year that you will be hearing much more about in the coming weeks. For more information about how to get involved or make a donation, please check out the information under the Foundation tab on the Fairfield website: https://fairfieldmagnet.org/home/fairfield-foundation/.
As we always do, I will start this year by asking each of you to join the PTA. A single membership costs $10, and the PTA is instrumental in providing our school with so many extras that would not be possible without your support. Some of you may be asking what the Fairfield PTA does or why you should join, especially this year when school will look so different. Our motto is “Every child – one voice,” and our goal is to have at least one PTA member for each child in our school. In addition to the community-building events we put on for our Fairfield community, we advocate for our kids and our school. As many of you know, we’ve been asking for a new building to provide a better space for some of our students and teachers to meet. We have been, and plan to continue to, advocate for choices for our families as we navigate school options during the COVID-19 pandemic. And, we plan to host as many of our Fairfield community events as we are permitted to so that our community can continue to remain strong and supportive of one another.
In closing, I want to invite each of you to get involved with PTA. We hope to have as many of our normal, fun, family-oriented events as possible, and there is still time to get involved on a planning committee. If you’d like to get involved, please reach out to the committee chairperson or to me at [email protected]
And, regardless of what happens during this school year, your PTA will be involved in making an impact and building community. Come join us – we would love to have you!
